Bright light, a chunky mix and something to climb are the secrets to those big split leaves.

Light

Monsteras grow best in bright, indirect light, such as near an east window or a few feet from a south or west window. Too little light gives small leaves with no splits; harsh direct sun can scorch them.

Water and soil

Water when the top two inches of soil are dry, then let excess drain away. Use a chunky, airy mix of potting soil, orchid bark and perlite so roots get oxygen.

Quick tips

  • Wipe leaves monthly
  • Feed in spring and summer
  • Rotate the pot for even growth

Support and repotting

Give your monstera a moss pole or stake to climb; climbing plants produce larger, more mature leaves. Repot every couple of years in spring, going up just one pot size.
